Metatomix SMARTE Presented as Syndromic Surveillance Solution in National HRSA Report

For Effective Surveillance and Early Detection of Bio-Terror Attacks, Metatomix SMARTE is the Only Semantic Web-Based Solution for National Bioterrorism Hospital Preparedness

WALTHAM, MA, June 28, 2004 -- Metatomix, Inc., the leader in Semantic Web-based software solutions for enterprise resource interoperability (ERI), today announced that Metatomix SMARTE, the only Semantic Web-based solution for syndromic surveillance, has been selected and profiled in a national report on syndromic surveillance systems, from the Health Resource and Services Administration (HRSA), an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Recently, the HRSA National Bioterrorism Hospital Preparedness Program (NBHPP) awarded approximately $498 million to 62 state, territorial, and municipal health departments to promote hospital preparedness. In the "National Bioterrorism Hospital Preparedness Program Informational Report," prepared by Booz Allen Hamilton for HRSA, the agency notes, "A dimension of preparedness includes the capacity to engage in effective surveillance for early detection of bioterrorist attacks and other outbreaks of disease. Many experts believe that syndromic surveillance holds great promise in enhancing our ability to detect both planned and unplanned outbreaks of disease."

Metatomix SMARTE, the company's premier platform for enterprise resource interoperability (ERI), is the only Semantic Web-based solution designed to leverage existing systems to provide public health leaders with real-time syndromic surveillance and information sharing across disparate healthcare information networks. Whether for routine infectious disease surveillance or issuing an alert to local hospitals on a potential outbreak or bio-terrorist attack, Metatomix SMARTE can manage both public health monitoring and notification requirements - including NEDSS, HAN and PHIN systems - with unprecedented speed and agility.

"With the expectation that our nation will face a rise in both biological and chemical threats, it has become increasingly important for public health officials to deploy an integrated, monitoring and surveillance solution for early and rapid response," said Bob Angelo, chairman, president, and chief executive officer of Metatomix. "Our focus on delivering a Semantic Web-based solution enables Metatomix to deliver the most comprehensive bioterrorism and syndromic surveillance system to the marketplace today. With SMARTE, public health officials can implement a dual purpose syndromic surveillance system for real-time monitoring of both bioterrorism and communicable diseases."

Metatomix was also a recent participant at the Center for Digital Government-hosted Hospital Bioterrorism Preparedness Teleconference. This live teleconference event discussed the challenges facing hospitals in their efforts to prepare for bioterrorism. Guest speaker Andrew Wigglesworth, president and chief executive officer, the Delaware Valley Healthcare Council, presented his vision for a real-time incident management and surveillance system based on Metatomix technology.
