Two Arkansas companies partner
to provide solution for post-mastectomy patients
Snell Prosthetic & Orthotic Laboratory to carry ContourMed breast
prosthesis
LITTLE ROCK – August 22, 2003 – Snell Prosthetic
and Orthotic Laboratory, Arkansas’ largest and oldest prosthetic
and orthotic practice, and ContourMed, the leader in custom breast
prosthetics, today announced a partnership to distribute ContourMed
breast prosthetics at Snell’s nine Arkansas facilities. ContourMed
is a breast prosthesis manufacturer and the first company to emerge
from Arkansas BioVentures, the technology development incubator
at UAMS’ Biomedical Biotechnology Center.
“We recently started offering a wide range of mastectomy products
and accessories in our Mastectomy Division, but we were missing
one component – a custom, lightweight breast form,”
said Rick Fleetwood, Snell general manager. “With the ContourMed
product, we are able to offer Arkansas breast cancer survivors the
most advanced prosthetic technology available.”
As a part of the partnership, a portion of each ContourMed prosthesis
sale at Snell Laboratory will be donated to the Central Arkansas
Radiation Therapy Institute (CARTI) Foundation in the survivor’s
name. Donation amounts will be based on the years of survivorship.
“If someone is a 35-year breast cancer survivor, $35 will
be donated to CARTI in their name,” said Fleetwood. “Many
of our offices are located in the same cities where CARTI has a
presence, so it is likely that some of the women we will be fitting
will have received treatment at CARTI.”
According to Mimi San Pedro, ContourMed president, the ContourMed
breast prosthesis is the only product on the market that enables
post-mastectomy patients a custom-designed, lightweight fit.
“Each prosthesis is an original creation for women who will
wear it,” said San Pedro. “With our 3-D laser scanning
technology, we capture each woman’s unique chest anatomy traits
to create a prosthesis that fits her like a puzzle piece. Our partnership
with Snell will enable more women throughout the state an opportunity
to be fitted for this custom solution.”
The main focus of this partnership stems from the desire to serve
the breast cancer survivors of Arkansas. Snell Laboratory and ContourMed
joined together to provide the service of statewide availability
of this unique, custom product. The derived benefits of this partnership
are to the patients through the various CARTI programs funded by
this project.
